Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is located on Futoushan of northern suburb and about 10 km downtown from Chengdu. It was established in 1987 and opened to the public in 1995. The whole base covers an area of 106 hectares. As the development of the third project, the base’s total area will extend to 200 hectares. The panda base has not only dedicated itself to giant panda conservation, but has also made great efforts to combine natural scenery and man-made landscapes to create wonderful and humane living areas for giant pandas, red pandas, and other Chinese endangered animals. And the main aim is to increase the population of giant panda. With the constant effort in the name of environment protection now it is one of the most important bases of protection.

In the base you can get a close visit with panda. The panda living in there are given large naturalistic habitats and supplied with necessary facilities, including a fodder room, sleep quarters and medical station. The visitors can directly see the pandas frolicking on the grass without the iron bars as zoo. Around the base we can see bamboos thriving everywhere, but none of them are fed to the pandas. The panda’s bamboo all comes from the mountains and special misting sheds built all around the grounds to keep bamboo fresh. It is really an excellent recreational area and highlight for tourists.

The difference in Chengdu research base of giant panda breeding from Wolong nature reserve is panda. Of course both of them are nonprofit institution. However, there is no wild panda except 6 pandas that was rescued from outdoor in the early of found. And base’s original intention is helping these injured pandas. To the end of last year there successfully propagate 120 from 82 embryos in artificial way. And now 67 giant pandas are living in there. Actually there is a section call the panda kindergarten. All the cubs are kept in there with being separated from the adult pandas so that they can be reared by the keepers. In the meaning time, the base invites the researchers and scientists from other nations to exchange technique annually. Panda is not only the treasure of China but also of the whole world.

Achievement of the base is remarkable. Due to the manual raising the panda’s life has been extended to 20 years or longer. They are usually at 4 or 5 years old. And the reproduction period is more than 10 years. The rate of fertilization, pregnancy, birth and survival have got a sharply result in increasing. With a high top-notch, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda is very successful at producing cubs. For example, Meimei, a panda known as “Herione Mother”, has given birth to 10 cubs in 9 pregnancies. Seven of them were survived. It as well as makes many first-time experiences, such as firstly bred the giant panda with freeze semen in success, firstly got the twins panda cubs survived, and firstly run the parentage appraisal for panda. All of these indicated that the giant panda, if given an appropriate environment, can also show great potential of population growth.
