The
Shangshuyuan Church is located in Group 2, Huishui Village, Bailu Town,
Pengzhou City in Chengdu. Its construction started in 1895 and, after 13
years, it was completed in 1908. The church was built by a French Catholic
missionary and the building occupies a land area of 10440 square metres,
including the main building, the north and south foyers and St. Mary's
Worshipping Auditorium, which occupied 4434 square metres.
The priests did a wonderful job. They spread the gospel to the villagers
with much patience and resilience. They faced the obstacles and real-life
struggles as martyrs, and carefully disseminated God's gospel among the
villagers. To enhance their evangelism, they even took measures to please
the villagers, such as announcing that whoever becomes a Catholic can enjoy
free Western medical treatment, and they would help those who did not own
any fields to grow crops. They would even send lonely, old people to the
nursing home they had set up. Children could go to school for free.
The missionary would also matchmake for those who were single.
As a result, more and more Chinese people walked into the church and had
themselves baptised, attended worship services in the church regularly. In
the mass hysteria of repentence and prayer, the hope of going to heaven
filled the hearts of the villagers.
According to historical writings, during the Ming and Qing dynasties in ancient China, there were as many as 10 000 Ca
tholic believers in Sichuan Province. In Bailu Town, as many as 1000 villagers were baptised.
In those years many bridegrooms and brides come to the Shangshuyuan Church

18/111D5:Dujiangyan-Chengdu
we
visited Dujiangyan Irrigation System
The Dujiangyan Irrigation system is a miracle of ancient Chinese ingenuity.
Before the completion of Dujiangyan irrigation project, the plains around
the Min River were prone to floods due to the fast moving Min River flowing
down from its mountain source and meeting flat ground. It was in the Warring
States period about 2200 years ago, that the engineer Li Bing and his son
led the construction of the Dujiangyan irrigation system that tamed the
phantasmagoric Min River and irrigated the surrounding plains.
The central brilliant idea of the project is the annual silt removal and
maintenance plan devised by Li Bing that ensures the projects long-term
usefulness. The actual structure of the project includes a dyke that divides
the Min River into inner and outer flows. The inner flow is then redirected
to irrigate local farm land. One interesting thing about the irrigation
system is that the project is still in operation and has trebled its
original irrigation area of 1 million hectares.
Then we drove to Juyuan town for taking picture of
Junyuan middle school, the broken Junyuan middle school ( about 287
died),is no more, but the new Junyuan Middle School
After a
devastating 8 earthquake hit
China
on May 12, around 900 students were buried when a school collapsed near the
Chinese city of
Chengdu,
Sichuan's
provincial capital. According to a report in the
Scientific American
the school's collapse was caused by the 6.0 aftershock. 287 students and
teachers died.
We drove to Chengdu for
overnight, afternoon will be free. Good bye Dinner is Hot Pot(chaffy
dish).
Chengdu people love Hot Pot, which is basically a big bowl with a divider at
the middle. Usually, in one side of the bowl is a chili pepper soup, and the
other side is a bland soup, so the quests could have two flavor in one time.
Underneath the pot is a gas flame. You sit with a bunch of raw dishes in
front of you [meats, vegetables and more] and put them in the boiling soup,
retrieving them later with your chopsticks, taste it, oh, what a delicious
food in the world!
